Jonathan (Jon) Raley is an associate in our Charleston office and primarily practices in professional malpractice defense, representing Architects and Engineers within Construction Litigation. He works directly with Tyler P. Winton to provide legal defense against multi-million dollar construction and design defect claims that include class action litigation, multi-family projects, site work design, roadway engineering, design-build projects and more.
Jon graduated cum laude from Charleston School of Law where he received the CALI Award in Civil Procedure, Business Law, Products Liability, and Law Practice Economics. While in law school, he served as a two-term Research Fellow for Professor William Janssen, covering Civil Procedure and Ethics based topics, and as a Contracts Teaching Fellow for first year students. He also served on the Trial Advocacy Board where he received record high scores for his advocacy work in external competitions.
Prior to joining CSVL, Jon spent two years clerking with Judge Wayne Creech at the South Carolina Family Court and he also assisted with the preparation for appeals heard at the South Carolina Supreme Court in attempts to overturn wrongful convictions, receiving recognition from the Charleston School of law for the hundreds of hours of pro bono service devoted towards those efforts. Jon also spent time at a well-respected litigation boutique in Charleston, where he gained valuable perspective and experience handling high profile civil litigation in complex cases involving nuanced commercial disputes, unfair trade practices, breaches of fiduciary duty, bank and wire fraud, and conspiracy claims. Additionally, Jon brings valuable experience from his time as a law clerk at one of the state’s preeminent plaintiffs’ firms, handling all aspects of wrongful death claims, including a trial resulting in a nearly eight-figure verdict.
When Jon is not practicing law, he enjoys climbing, hiking, canyoneering, and exploring backcountry mountains in Colorado with his siblings. He has earned his private pilot’s license and rescue diver certification and is an Eagle Scout and board member of the American Packrafting Association. Jon proudly volunteers with counseling and mentorship of people suffering from alcoholism and addiction who are seeking recovery. Jon frequently assists Lawyers Helping Lawyers through speaking engagements, seminars, and CLEs at law schools across South Carolina.
