CSVL’s Transportation Practice group regularly counsels and represents intrastate and interstate motor carriers of persons and property, drivers, owner-operators, shippers, freight forwarders, third party logistics providers (3PL’s), insurers, Transportation Network Companies and Rideshare Organizations, and other transportation related entities throughout Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Our attorneys are experienced and knowledgeable in handing all aspects of claims and losses in the transportation field. We assist clients with issues involving initial accident investigation and claims, personal injury or wrongful death claims, cargo loss, contribution and indemnification claims, insurance coverage disputes, intermodal contract disputes, federal and state regulatory practices involving motor carriers and transportation network organizations, and employment and hiring practices. While many transportation matters are resolved without trial, CSVL lawyers are skilled trial lawyers and have an outstanding trial records representing our clients before juries.

Our Transportation Practice group strives to assist clients in resolving claims efficiently and cost-effectively, meeting the clients’ goals through pre-litigation investigation assistance and litigation. We understand and abide by client’s individual billing guidelines and protocols.

We regularly engage in preventative counseling with Transportation clients relating to changes in Federal regulations, State law, and industry practices. CSVL’s Transportation Practice Group also advises clients regarding risk management, claims handling practices, and State and Federal Law and Regulatory developments through personal contact, client seminars, industry seminars, firm publications, and our website.

Further, we support the motor carrier associations in  Georgia and South Carolina.


D. Gary Lovell, Jr. leads Copeland, Stair, Valz, & Lovell, LLP’s transportation practice group. The transportation group has over 100 years of combined experience investigating, litigating and effectively resolving transportation liability claims and lawsuits for primary and excess insurers and self-insured clients.

Gary oversees the firm’s 24-hour emergency response team for our transportation clients throughout the Southeast. Gary is among the original attorneys in the United States to formulate and implement the emergency response model that has become the industry standard. Gary has a strong working relationship with highly respected and skilled investigators, adjusters and accident reconstruction experts who specialize in transportation emergency response.

Our firm immediately and effectively manages the preservation of vital evidence to include equipment, data downloads, identifying and interviewing witnesses, and working with law enforcement. Just as importantly, we have the experience and understanding to protect the involved drivers during these extraordinarily stressful events and to ensure that they cooperate with law enforcement and effectively participate in the investigative process.
